Hiring activity related to cloud increased by a CAGR of 53% in the pharmaceutical industry since 2020

The global pharmaceutical industry witnessed a 53% rise in compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in new job postings related to cloud since 2020, according to GlobalData's Job Analytics database. New job postings increased by 81% year-on-year in 2021, and by 30% year-on-year in 2022.  

Notably, computer and mathematical occupations jobs accounted for 49% share of the global pharmaceutical industry’s cloud-related new job postings since 2020.  

Computer and mathematical occupations drive cloud-related hiring activity  

Computer and mathematical occupations, with a share of 49%, emerged as the top cloud-related job roles within the pharmaceutical industry since 2020, with new job postings rising by 110% year-on-year in 2021 and rising by 31% year-on-year in 2022.    

Management occupations came in second with a share of 26%, with new job postings rising by 87% year-on-year in 2021 and rising by 33% year-on-year in 2022.  

 The other prominent cloud roles include architecture and engineering occupations with a 6% share, business and financial operations occupations with a 5% share and life, physical, and social science occupations with a 5% share.  

The top five companies in the pharmaceutical industry accounted for 36% of hiring activity

The top five companies, in terms of the number of new job postings tracked by GlobalData, since 2020 were F. Hoffmann-La Roche, Johnson & Johnson, AstraZeneca, GSK and Sanofi. Together they accounted for a combined share of 36% of all cloud-related new jobs in the pharmaceutical industry.  

 F. Hoffmann-La Roche posted 3,101 cloud-related jobs since 2020, followed by Johnson & Johnson with 2,403 jobs, and AstraZeneca with 2,312 jobs, according to GlobalData’s Job Analytics database.  

 New job postings by F. Hoffmann-La Roche increased by 92% year-on-year in 2021 and rose by 0.4% year-on-year in 2022, while those by Johnson & Johnson increased by 148% in 2021 and rose by 28% in 2022.  

Hiring activity was driven by the US with a 52% share of total new job postings since 2020  

The largest share of cloud-related new job postings in the pharmaceutical industry since 2020 was in the US with 52%, followed by India (11%) and the UK (5%). The share represented by the US remained unchanged in 2021 and 2022.
