Hiring activity related to metaverse increased by a CAGR of 11% in the pharmaceutical industry since 2020

The global pharmaceutical industry witnessed a 11% rise in compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in new job postings related to metaverse since 2020, according to GlobalData's Job Analytics database. New job postings increased by 13% year-on-year in 2021, and by 8% year-on-year in 2022.

Notably, management occupations jobs accounted for 51% share of the global pharmaceutical industry’s metaverse-related new job postings since 2020.

Management occupations drive metaverse-related hiring activity

Management occupations, with a share of 51%, emerged as the top metaverse-related job roles within the pharmaceutical industry since 2020, with new job postings rising by 14% year-on-year in 2021 and by 62% year-on-year in 2022.

Computer and mathematical occupations came in second with a share of 15%, with new job postings rising by 56% year-on-year in 2021 and falling by 20% year-on-year in 2022.

The other prominent metaverse roles include business and financial operations occupations (9% share), and life, physical, and social science occupations (5% share).

The top five companies in the pharmaceutical industry accounted for 54% of hiring activity

The top five companies, in terms of the number of new job postings tracked by GlobalData, since 2020 were Boehringer Ingelheim International, AstraZeneca, Sanofi, Johnson & Johnson, and Takeda Pharmaceutical. Together they accounted for a combined share of 54% of all metaverse-related new jobs in the pharmaceutical industry.

Boehringer Ingelheim International posted 301 metaverse-related jobs since 2020, followed by AstraZeneca with 204 jobs, and Sanofi with 177 jobs, according to GlobalData’s Job Analytics database.

New job postings by Boehringer Ingelheim International decreased by 60% year-on-year in 2021 and by 7% year-on-year in 2022, while those by AstraZeneca increased by 161% in 2021 and decreased by 1% in 2022.

Hiring activity was driven by the US with a 53% share of total new job postings since 2020

The largest share of metaverse-related new job postings in the pharmaceutical industry since 2020 was in the US with 53%, followed by Switzerland (5%) and India (5%). The share represented by the US decreased by four percentage points from 53% in 2021 to 49% in 2022.
